People in the Ollerton area can now order food via Uber Eats, which is good news for any guests staying at our holiday cottage.

Foodies will be happy to know that as of Thursday, March 2,5 2021 the popular delivery app will enable customers to order food from the comfort of their homes, at the touch of a button.

No longer will you need to hunt for the closest drive-thru or takeaway for your weekend treat, as McDonald’s becomes the first restaurant to launch in the area via the Uber Eats app.

The app is available every day of the week from 8am – midnight, meaning breakfast, lunch or dinner can be delivered straight to your door.

Toussaint Wattinne, general manager of Uber Eats in the UK, commented: “We are really excited to be launching in Ollerton, firstly with McDonald’s and a host of local restaurants joining in the coming weeks. We hope to make it even easier for local residents to enjoy a variety of delicious food both comfortably and safely.”

Uber Eats launched in the UK in 2016 and is active in most major cities and town in the country.

A Film & Food Fest will be visiting Nottingham this summer with four days of open-air cinema, local street food and live comedy.

Taking place on July 15th to 18th, the location for this year’s event will be Victoria Embankment, organised by AdventureCinema which is bringing staycation entertainment to 15 major cities across the UK in 2021.

Saturday and Sunday afternoons will be reserved for family films, with classics like The Lion King and The Goonies, and modern favourites like The Greatest Showman Sing-A-Long, Onward and Doolittle.

There will also be mouth-watering street food from local traders, curated by Street Food Warehouse. Visitors can expect everything from gourmet burgers and bruschetta to crepes and caramel ice-cream, along with a bar serving beers and bespoke cocktails.

Gates will open up to three hours before each film starts.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings will feature live comedy from some of the UK’s most exciting comedians, followed by blockbuster movies.

With a varied mix of films on offer – including favourites such as Grease and Dirty Dancing and some of 2020’s finest like Joker, JoJo Rabbit and The Invisible Man – there’s something for all the family.

The Film & Food Fest is coming to Nottingham this summer

The event will kick off on the Thursday with a special showcase of short movies from some of the UK’s finest independent filmmakers.

Different in each region, the showcase will highlight the work of local creatives, giving their films a major platform, with £2 from every ticket sold for the short film nights going to support local film organisations within each city.

To ensure the safety of its events, Film & Food Fest will be taking place exclusively in socially spacious, outdoor venues across the country. There will also be other measures in place, meaning the festival will be 100 percent compliant with government safety guidelines.

Prices:

Thursday evening (short film showcase) tickets cost £6 + booking fee

Friday, Saturday and Sunday tickets start from £16.50 + booking fee

For afternoon showings, children 12 years and under go half-price + plus booking fee

For more information visit filmandfoodfest.com

Ticket holders will be offered a 100 percent money-back guarantee if the event isn’t able to go ahead.

Magnificent James Watt Beam Engines

The Victorians knew a thing or two about steam power, and delivering water to the growing population and industries in the Nottinghamshire area required a big solution. Preserved in all its original majesty is the pumping station at Papplewick, home to steam powered beam engines designed by James Watt, and the finest examples in Britain.

What’s On At Papplewick

In addition to the beam engines are the Lancashire boilers that create the steam to drive the engines, and the stunning underground vaulted reservoir.

Workshops and public steaming days can be booked in advance, and the site is also home to craft fairs and classic and vintage car shows.

The spectacular backdrop is also now available as a wedding venue, which is especially good news for those wanting to satisfy their steampunk tendencies.

For accommodation, see Bookings and Availability.

Check out the calendar on the official website.

These stunning machines were built to last and, thanks to the protected status of Scheduled Ancient Monument and the hard work of a team of volunteers, the pumping station and engines are as close to immortal as you can get.

New Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre Opens In Edwinstowe

Around ten minutes drive from our self-catering holiday home, the new Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre is the perfect place to start exploring the ancient woodlands and RSPB nature reserve.

With maps, trail guides for cycling and walking, birdwatching journals and information on all the local area has to offer, this modern facility also includes a cafe, shop and accessible toilets and showers.

If you have come to see Robin Hood’s Major Oak, it is well signposted from the start of the trails across the road from the car park.

It is also ideally located for the Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre and Edwinstowe town where you will find pubs, shops, our favourite butchers and a popular bistro. Between the Visitor Centre and the town you will find St Mary’s Church where legend tells us Robin and Marian were wed. The church is opposite Launay’s and Forest Lodge which are both wonderful places to eat and drink.

For more on the local history, see Edwinstowe Historical Society

If you have visited the area before and wondered what has happened to Sherwood Forest, you will see from the map below how it has changed since the days of Robin Hood. There are still many large areas of the original forest in existence and the Visitor Centre alone boasts 1000 acres. Other areas include Clumber Park, Sherwood Pines, Rufford Country Park and Thoresby Hall.

Many of the locations attributed to the legend of Robin Hood, his merry men and adversaries are hidden away. So, if you have an irresistible urge to go off the beaten track and hunt down one or more of these, the treasure map is below. For those less adventurous we recommend the intricate wood carving that adorns one of the fireplaces at Thoresby Hall, No. 4.

Our accommodation is roughly ten minutes drive from Edwinstowe and Ollerton.
